Passport processing times abroad

The official processing times for a passport from the moment documents are submitted to the consulate:

1 month - old-style passport (valid for 5 years) for children under 14
2 months - old-style passport (valid for 5 years) for adults
3 months - new-generation passport (valid for 10 years)

Three months is the maximum processing time abroad. That is how long a biometric passport may take: its blank is personalised in Russia and delivered to the consulate. An old-style passport is printed at the consulate itself — within two months.

These deadlines do not take into account the time it may take to schedule an appointment to submit the documents. Therefore, we recommend starting the process of replacing an expiring passport well in advance.

Appointments are managed by the consulate itself through its own booking system — each consulate has its own. If there are no free dates, we will advise you what to do, and with the "with appointment" plan we will help you book.
How do I fill in the passport application for a Russian consulate?
Abroad, the passport application is filled in on the consular portal of the Russian Foreign Ministry, and a printout with a QR code is needed to apply at the consulate. We fill in the application for you from your documents within 2 business days of payment; you then submit the documents in person.
Can I apply for a Russian passport at a consulate in another country?
Yes. You can apply for a passport at any Russian consulate abroad — consular registration and a residence permit in that country are not required. The finished passport is issued where the application was filed, so choose the consulate bearing in mind that you will have to come back for it.
Can I change my Russian internal passport at the consulate?
No, the Russian internal passport can only be processed and obtained on the territory of Russia in person.
What is the difference between a 5-year and a 10-year passport?

Can I simply include my child in my passport instead of applying for a separate one for them?
No. Children's details are not entered in a parent's passport — a child needs their own passport.
Can I apply for a second passport in addition to the one I already have?
Yes, but the second passport can only be a new-style passport valid for 10 years.
Which passport is issued faster — the 5-year or the 10-year one?
Abroad, the old-style 5-year passport is faster: up to two months from the application, up to one month for children under 14. The biometric 10-year passport takes up to three months.
Can a Russian passport be extended abroad?
No, a passport cannot be extended — a new one is issued. You can apply at the consulate in advance, without waiting for the old one to expire.
How do I collect the finished passport?
In person, at the consulate where the application was submitted. A child's passport is collected by a parent or another legal representative.
What should I do if my passport is lost or stolen abroad?
Report the loss to the consulate — the passport will be declared invalid. You can apply for a new passport there, and if you need to return to Russia urgently, a certificate of return is issued.
What happens to my old passport when I apply for a new Russian passport?
The previously issued passport remains with you when applying for a new passport. In the case of applying for a replacement of the old one, it is invalidated after receiving the new one. In the case of obtaining an additional passport, it remains valid.
How can I apply for a new Russian passport if my old one has expired and I do not have an internal passport?
In the absence of a valid foreign passport and internal passport, it is necessary to verify the Russian citizenship at the nearest consulate/embassy. The application for a new passport is not accepted until the verification of the applicant's Russian citizenship is completed.
Is a military ID required to obtain a Russian passport?
No, neither a military ID nor a certificate from the military enlistment office nor a military service registration certificate is required to apply for and receive a passport.
